How to Make Tiger nut Milk From Tiger nut Flour

Introduction

Tiger nuts in truth are not nuts. They are tubers just like potatoes or carrots. Tiger nuts are called nuts because of how they look; they are brownish, wrinkly peanut-sized tubers, so if you look at them, “nuts” is likely to come to your mind.

Tiger nuts are also known as chufa, earth almonds, and yellow nutsedge. Tiger nuts are quite nutritious and have been linked to many health benefits such as lowering cholesterol which can lead to a reduction in heart problems.

Today’s blog is not just about tiger nuts, I will be focusing on one of its by-products which is tiger nut milk, and how we can make it from tiger nut flour. This is important because tiger nut milk seems to be increasing in popularity as a healthy alternative to regular dairy milk.

Getting Started on How to make tiger nut milk from tiger nut flour.

Before you make your tiger nut milk, it is important to have all you will need for its preparation on the ground.

Ingredients NeededEquipment Needed
Tigernut FlourBlender
WaterNut Milk Bag pr Cheesecloth
Sweeteners or flavoring (Optional)Container for storing milk.

Making Tigernut Milk

  • If you are making tiger nut milk in your home, I would recommend a mix ratio of 1 liter of water to 1½ cups of tiger nut flour. If you are manufacturing it in larger quantities, I would suggest extrapolating it.
  • Your first step is to pour the 1 liter of water into your blender, then add the 1½ cups of tiger nut flour to it.
  • Blend them together for 1 to 2 minutes, then leave the mixture to rest for about 15 minutes. When it is rested, blend it again for another 1 to 2 minutes. This is to make sure you get a well-hydrated and very good mixture.
  • Your next step is to get your container or reservoir to store your milk together with your sieve or strainer. Place the sieve above the container, then pour the mixture of water and tiger nut flour into it.
  • Note that because of the constituency of the mix, the sieve may not extract the milk from the mixture at once, you need to stir and push it through to help the separation along.

Flavoring and Storing Tigernut Milk

  • Adding sweeteners or flavorings is optional. This is because the tiger nut milk is already sweet and tastes quite delicious. However, to each his own, so some people would like to add flavorings. You can use vanilla, caramel, or my personal favorite; chocolate. In the end, it depends on individual preference.
  • For Proper storage, I would recommend refrigeration.

Conclusion

As you can see the process of making tiger nut milk from tiger nut flour is relatively easy, that is one of the reasons I love this milk. And of course, it is a healthy dairy-free alternative, with many benefits such as being non-GMO, cholesterol-free, gluten-free, and many more.
